Director of Laboratory Services

Summary: The Director of Laboratory Services is responsible for ongoing compliance with the required regulatory agencies. Additionally, it is the responsibility of the Director of Laboratory Services to effectively manage resources and ensure laboratory services are delivered according to the agency’s philosophy and accepted practice standards. You must be a Licensed Vocational Nurse with the requirements listed below. Representative of the knowledge, skills and/or ability required.   • Formulates, implements, and systematically monitors departmental performance improvement policies and procedures.
  • Establishes, implements and monitors proficiency and quality programs that are appropriate for testing performed.
  • Ensures necessary remedial actions are taken and documented whenever deviations from standard performance.
  • Ensures enrollment and participation in an approved proficiency testing program.
  • Delegates responsibilities and monitors utilization of time.
  • Develops new ideas and encourages staff input to improve services.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings for informational and planning purposes.
  • Participates in continuing education.
  • Verbal and written communication is clear, concise and presented in an organized manner.
  • Information is disseminated to all appropriate areas in a timely manner.
  • Is accessible to provide on site, telephone or electronic consultation as needed.
  • Promotes open line of communication among executive management, medical staff, nursing, and other ancillary departments.
  • Effectively plans, prepares and monitors the annual departmental budget to include staffing, services and supplies.
  • Functions within the budget and effectively manages the resources.
  • Communicates budgetary status/problems with executive management and staff to inform and minimize adverse impact if any.
  • Defines long range strategic and operational plans, resources and allocations.
  • Promotes staff recruiting, training, development and retention.
  • Ensures staff competency and continuing education.
  • Employs a sufficient number of laboratory personnel with appropriate education and experience.
  • Ensures personnel have appropriate education, training, and experience before testing patient specimens.
  • Complies with the facility privacy policies and procedures for the management of protected health information (PHI)
  • Understands that ignoring situations where PHI may have been potentially compromised comes with legal ramifications to both the practice and myself.
  • Actively involved in evaluation and recommending equipment for purchase or lease.
  • Oversees inventory control of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Provides adequate substitutes for supplies or reagents when necessary due to back orders or recalls.
  • Makes long range plans covering organization capabilities and projected changes in demand for services.
  • Specific departmental goals are submitted to executive management.
  • Ensures policies and procedure manuals are current, accurate, periodically reviewed and readily available.
  • Recommends and implements measures necessary for the laboratory to remain in compliance with all appropriate credentialing and regulatory agencies.
  • Develops, revises, implements and evaluates tools to measure customer and patient satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, skill and ability to administer care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.
  • Per yearly safety training calendar, complete staff education, training and any surveillance required. Completed training attendance sheets are to be turned into Safety Chairperson on a regular basis.
  • Follows Universal Precaution Procedures while performing applicable duties.
  • Utilizes appropriate Personal Protective Equipment in the performance of duties.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures applicable to job position.
  • Maintains computer skills necessary to insure accuracy and efficiency in the performance of all data entry duties.
  • Adheres to infection control and safety policies, including education, reporting and practice implementation specific to job position.
  • Helps to maintain the office area to reduce the risk of safety hazards and enhance general appearance.

Education and or/ Experience:

Must have high school degree or general equivalence degree.

Must be a Licensed Vocational Nurse or phlebotomist with supervision experience - three years in the medical field.

Must demonstrate computer knowledge.

Must be able to communicate with people of all ages.
