Steward Medical Group (SMG), Inc. is Steward's multi-specialty group practice with over 4,500 employees including over 1,800 physicians and advanced practitioners. SMG operates approximately 450 practice locations throughout Massachusetts, Southern New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Utah, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, and provides more than 4 million patient encounters per year.

Key Responsibilities

1. Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.

a.Evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing.
b.Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens.
c.Organizes workload for maximum efficiency in order to complete tests being performed.
d.Accurately performs tests as requested on specimens received.
e.Verifies accuracy of results before reporting results.

2. Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
a.Reports results within time limits established for test procedures.
b.Reports results for stats, abnormals, critical values, and other categories of special requests as defined by laboratory policy.
c.Documents special handling required for test results that meet outlying (established) criteria.

3. Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor.
a.Performs appropriate quality control for the test procedure.
b.Accurately analyzes and evaluates QC results obtained before accepting and reporting patient test results.
c.Record results obtained for quality control testing as defined in the test procedure.
d.Appropriately notifies supervisor of discrepant QC results.

4. Performs daily, weekly, monthly or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate. Performs calibration of equipment as required.
a.Performs maintenance according to the schedule for instruments/equipment.
b.Documents performance of maintenance procedures for instruments/equipment.
c.Performs calibration of equipment according to scheduled intervals or receipt of reagents.
d.Documents calibration of equipment.

5. Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem.
a.Follows established guidelines for troubleshooting procedures.
b.Follows established guidelines for resolving patient specimen problems.
c.Documents steps taken during the troubleshooting process.
d.Immediately notifies supervisor when unable to solve problems.

6. Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or bodily fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
a.Wears laboratory coats, gloves, and protective devices as required when handling specimens.
b.Follows safety policies for dress.
c.Follows safety policies when using chemicals.
d.Reports any safety hazards to the appropriate supervisor.
e.Uses protective barrier equipment as required.
f.Disinfects and cleans work benches/areas according to established protocol.
g.Properly disposes contaminated and hazardous waste materials.

7. Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, fingersticks, heelsticks, bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient (from age 0 to greater than 100 years) requiring this procedure.
a.Accurately performs bleeding times when requested or when required by workload demands.
b.Accurately performs venipuncture procedures when requested or when required by workload demands.
c.Accurately performs heelstick or fingerstick procedures when requested or when required by workload demands.

8. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job‘related hazards.
a.Attends all required safety education programs.
b.Provides complete and accurate responses to safety questions.
c.Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
d.Maintains work area and equipment in the condition required by department standards.
e.Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions.
f.If manager/leader, provides for the safety of department employees.

9. Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
a.Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment.
b.Ensures a safe environment by complying with established procedures.
c.Attends annual education programs.

10. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
a.Interacts with all of the above in a considerate, helpful, and courteous manner, as observed by supervisor and peers.

a.Answers any telephone within three rings.

and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed.

11. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
a.Participates in staff meetings, as determined by supervisor.
b.Actively participates in ongoing quality assurance projects.
c.Supports the hospital’s mission, policies, and procedures through attendance and participation at committee meetings, if applicable.
d.Utilizes automated system to communicate inter- and intradepartmentally, as appropriate.
e.Will access and respond to e‘mail messages in a timely manner.
f.Utilization of computer functions: accesses correct patient encounter when ordering tests, enters demographic information correctly, and orders appropriate procedure correctly.
g.Completes work assignments on time/readily accepts assignments, as observed by supervisor.
h.Reports to work on time and is at work as scheduled, as observed by supervisor.

Job Requirements
Minimum Education
-Associate’s degree in a relevant science preferred.
-MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration or has completed a technician training program in a school accredited/approved by HHS, or MLT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations.
-Four months’ clinical laboratory internship preferred.
