PHYSICAL THERAPY ASSISTANT

Summary:

Assist the therapist in evaluating the level of function by applying diagnostic and prognostic muscle nerve, joint, and functional ability test. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Responsibilities:

  • May provide physical therapy services only under the supervision of a Physical Therapist of this title, relating to supervisor.
  • Provides physical therapy services as specified in the Physical Therapy Plan of Care.
  • Is responsible for and will participate in the patient’s therapy care.
  • Each progress note in the patient’s chart made by the physical therapy assistant must include the name of the supervising physical therapist.
  • Provides therapy services as specified in the written plan of care.
  • Prepares patients, treatment areas, and equipment for therapy.
  • Implements treatment programs that include therapeutic exercises, gait training and techniques, ADL training techniques, administration of therapeutic heat and cold, administration of ultrasound, therapeutic electric current, ultraviolet, and traction, performance of intermittent venous compression, application of external bandages, dressings, support, and the performance of goniometric measurement.
  • Is responsible for modifying treatment techniques as indicated in the plan of care.
  • Responds to acute changes in physiological state, and interacts with the patient and families in a manner which provides the desired physiological support.
  • Teaches other health care providers, patients, and families to perform selected treatment procedures and functional activities.
  • Demonstrates appropriate and effective written, oral, and nonverbal communication with patients and their families.
  • Demonstrates safe, ethical, and legal practice.
  • Understands basic concepts related to the health care system, including multidisciplinary team approach, quality care, government agencies, private sector, role of other health care providers, health care facilities, issues, and problems.
  • Understands basic principles of levels of authority and responsibility, planning, time management, supervisory process, performance evaluations, policies and procedures, and fiscal consideration.
  • Responsible for light housekeeping of the facility.
  • Is in charge of the clinic when physical therapist is not in office and will make decisions in scope of Practice Act and/or Policies and Procedures of G.T.P.T.
  • Follows Universal Precaution Procedures while performing applicable duties.
  • Utilizes appropriate Personal Protective Equipment in the performance of duties.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures applicable to job position.
  • Maintains computer skills necessary to insure accuracy and efficiency in the performance of all data entry duties.
  • Adheres to infection control and safety policies, including education, reporting and practice implementation specific to job position.
  • Helps to maintain the office area to reduce the risk of safety hazards and enhance general appearance.
  • Protects and honors patient and coworker confidentiality.
  • Consistently adheres to the Agency dress code.
  • Meets attendance and punctuality expectations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education and/or Experience:

  1. Must have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
  2. Must have a certificate from an accredited physical therapy assistant program; a body of courses at a school, college, or university which has satisfied the accreditation standards of the Commission on Accreditation for Physical Therapy Education.
  3. Must have at least one years experience under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist.
  4. Must have a courteous manner and interact well with patients and coworkers.
  5. Must have a current license issued by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners, the Governing Body of the State of Texas.
